What Is a Pole Barn?
A pole barn is a post-frame building whose posts are set in the ground and carry the roof. Horizontal girts tie the posts together and hold the wall siding, so no full foundation wall is needed. UDA Services builds pole barns as garages, workshops, equipment barns and storage buildings. Pole building and post-frame building are other names for the same method. Our pole barns in the photos carry metal roofs over steel or board and batten siding. They are one of the buildings we put up as a design and build contractor.
What Can a Pole Barn Be Used For?
A pole barn can be used as a garage, a workshop or an equipment barn. A pole barn is an open span under one roof, so its use is set by its doors, floor and finish. Ours have been built as garages, workshops, equipment barns and buildings with lofts and porches. Four common uses show the range.
- A pole barn garage holds cars behind wide overhead doors.
- A workshop pole barn gets a concrete floor and an entry door beside the overhead door.
- An equipment barn uses tall doors for tractors and trailers.
- A pole barn with a loft adds storage or a room above the bays.
A covered porch along one side gives a shaded place to sit.

How Does UDA Services Build a Pole Barn?
Pole barn construction sets the posts first, then hangs the roof and walls on them. Our crews build each pole barn on site in six steps.
- Grade a level pad for the building.
- Set the posts in the ground along the building lines.
- Raise the roof trusses onto the headers fastened to the tops of the posts.
- Fasten the girts and purlins, then the steel siding and the metal roof panels.
- Hang the overhead and entry doors.
- Pour the concrete floor over a compacted gravel base, if the barn needs one.
A stone base or a contrasting lower band can finish the lower wall.

How Do You Insulate a Pole Barn?
Insulating a pole barn means filling the walls and roof so heat stays in and condensation stays off the steel. The right insulation depends on whether the barn will be heated. Three options cover most barns.
- Fiberglass blanket insulation fills the wall cavities between girts.
- Spray foam seals the steel and stops condensation where it forms.
- A roof liner or vapor barrier under the metal keeps drips off an unheated barn.
A heated workshop needs the walls and the roof insulated, while a cold storage barn may need only a condensation barrier. On our pole barns, a vapor barrier goes under the metal roof. Ask about the other options at the free site visit.
How Long Does It Take to Build a Pole Barn?
A typical UDA Services pole barn takes about two weeks to build. Build time runs from the first post to the last door. Grading the pad and pouring a concrete floor add days around the frame. A loft or a porch adds time. These times run from the start of work to the finished barn.
How Big Should a Pole Barn Be?
A pole barn should be big enough for what goes inside, plus room to open doors and walk around it. Size it from the vehicles, equipment or work it must hold. The door width and height follow the largest vehicle. The ceiling height follows the tallest load, or a loft above. The pad needs room for the building and an apron in front. Common footprints are on our page of pole barn plans and sizes.
What Sets the Price of a Pole Barn?
The price of a pole barn is set mostly by its footprint, its height and its floor. Each barn is priced in a written estimate after a free site visit. Five factors move that price.
- The footprint sets the size of the frame and the roof.
- The wall height changes the posts and the siding.
- A concrete floor or a gravel floor changes the cost of the floor.
- The number of overhead and entry doors adds to the build.
- A loft, a porch or insulation adds to the build as well.
Typical ranges are on our page about pole barn cost in Central PA.

We used UDA Services to build us a new two car garage. Jake and his team did an exceptional job! We could not be happier with the final product. It was a pleasure to work with them beginning with getting an estimate to finishing the job. We highly recommend their services!
Jake and Team can make it happen! I met with Jake to build a "custom" garage. From the initial visit to completion, his team never failed. He took my vision and worked with me every step of the way. His knowledge was very helpful in making suggestions to improve design. This project involved quite a bit of earth moving and Jake eased the stress of that, his crew knew exactly what they had to do. I can't say enough about Jake and his team, they are the hardest, sincere professionals I've seen. Daniel, Nate and crew are hard working talented workers. I have no problem recommending UDA services for any project you may have. If you want an honest, reliable, experienced, personal contractor, UDA services won't let you down. Would definitely use them for any future projects.
Highest quality craftsmanship - Our relationship with UDA started with the purchase of a large shed. They handled the full project including the custom build, 6' of fill, rock leveling, delivery, and landing. The shed arrived on time, at the quoted price, and they used a remote controlled tugger for the installation in a very tight spot, perfectly located. The shed build is of the finest quality, a beautiful addition to our property, value added. I liked the color of the stain so much, I asked if they could stain my cedar sided house to match it, our next UDA job. UDA stained our house and it is spectacular. They properly scraped and prepped the entire 2-1/2 story house by hand using attention to detail and precise replacement techniques to the existing siding where needed. This house has never looked so good. Because of their service, craftsmanship, and prompt service on those 2 projects, I asked UDA if they could replace our decks. As with the other 2 projects, they got right on it and scheduled the work. The fully consulted me at every step of the process choosing the design and materials, no over salesmanship, just honest suggestions and help with accomplishing the mission. The deck installation went perfectly with the same quality of workmanship and materials, timeliness, and budget adherence I've come to know with UDA. It's obvious we are totally satisfied the UDA's quality, attention to detail, level of skill, prompt service, courtesy, there's just too much good to say to cover the experience adequately. If you need quality work done with professionalism, courtesy, and craftsmanship that surpasses other service providers, UDA is it, they get it done...
