What Is a Detached Garage?
A detached garage is a garage that stands on its own, apart from the house. It has its own foundation, walls and roof, and often its own driveway. UDA Services builds detached garages to match the house they serve. A detached garage keeps fumes and noise away from the house. It can be placed where the lot has room, at the back or the side. Garages are a core part of our work as a general contractor for homes.
Which Garages Does UDA Services Build?
A custom garage is sized and styled for one property instead of picked from a catalog. We build three kinds, each with its own page below.
Garage plans and sizes. Garage plans and sizes run from a single-bay garage to a three-car garage and wider.
Garage with living quarters. A garage with living quarters adds an apartment, a studio or an office upstairs.
Pool houses and custom sheds. Pool houses and custom sheds are built to match the garage or the house.
Our garages carry stone wainscots, brick, log siding, vinyl or metal siding, as the photos show. Their roofs include gable and metal roofs.

Should You Build an Attached or a Detached Garage?
You should build attached for a dry walk into the house, or detached to keep fumes and noise away. An attached garage joins the house at a shared wall, and a detached garage has no shared wall. We build both, and the lot, the budget and the use decide which fits. Four points separate them.
- An attached garage gives a dry walk into the house.
- A detached garage keeps the house free of car fumes and workshop noise.
- A detached garage can be larger without changing the roof line of the house.
- An attached garage must meet fire separation rules where it joins the house.
Our attached vs detached garage comparison sets out the cost of each.
How Does UDA Services Build a Custom Garage?
A custom garage goes up in the same order as a small house: ground, slab, frame, roof and finish. Our crews take it through six steps.
- Show us where the garage should stand when we come out for a free site visit.
- Sign off on the garage design and the written estimate.
- Let us handle the permit and any HOA approval.
- See the ground graded and the footers and slab poured.
- Watch the walls and roof framed on site.
- Look over the siding, the roof, the windows and the entry doors as the building is finished.
How Long Does a Detached Garage Take to Build?
A typical UDA Services detached garage takes three to four weeks to build. Build time runs from the first day of digging to the last piece of trim. A garage with living space above takes longer than one built only for cars. The concrete slab needs time to cure before the walls go up. These times run from the start of work to the finished garage.
What Sets the Price of a Detached Garage?
The price of a garage is set mostly by its size, its foundation and what goes above the bays. Every garage is priced in a written estimate after a free site visit. Five factors move that price.
- The number of bays and the floor area set the size of the build.
- The ground work and the slab change the cost of the foundation.
- A second floor or a loft adds to the frame.
- The siding and roof materials change the cost of the shell.
- The number of doors and windows changes the finish.
Typical ranges by size are on our detached garage cost page.
Does a Garage Add Value to a Home?
Yes, a garage adds covered parking and storage, which many buyers look for. Value here means what the garage adds to the price a home can sell for. The gain depends on the market, on the size and on how well the garage matches the house. Does a detached garage add value to a home, and by how much? Our value page looks at the numbers.

We used UDA Services to build us a new two car garage. Jake and his team did an exceptional job! We could not be happier with the final product. It was a pleasure to work with them beginning with getting an estimate to finishing the job. We highly recommend their services!
Jake and Team can make it happen! I met with Jake to build a "custom" garage. From the initial visit to completion, his team never failed. He took my vision and worked with me every step of the way. His knowledge was very helpful in making suggestions to improve design. This project involved quite a bit of earth moving and Jake eased the stress of that, his crew knew exactly what they had to do. I can't say enough about Jake and his team, they are the hardest, sincere professionals I've seen. Daniel, Nate and crew are hard working talented workers. I have no problem recommending UDA services for any project you may have. If you want an honest, reliable, experienced, personal contractor, UDA services won't let you down. Would definitely use them for any future projects.
Highest quality craftsmanship - Our relationship with UDA started with the purchase of a large shed. They handled the full project including the custom build, 6' of fill, rock leveling, delivery, and landing. The shed arrived on time, at the quoted price, and they used a remote controlled tugger for the installation in a very tight spot, perfectly located. The shed build is of the finest quality, a beautiful addition to our property, value added. I liked the color of the stain so much, I asked if they could stain my cedar sided house to match it, our next UDA job. UDA stained our house and it is spectacular. They properly scraped and prepped the entire 2-1/2 story house by hand using attention to detail and precise replacement techniques to the existing siding where needed. This house has never looked so good. Because of their service, craftsmanship, and prompt service on those 2 projects, I asked UDA if they could replace our decks. As with the other 2 projects, they got right on it and scheduled the work. The fully consulted me at every step of the process choosing the design and materials, no over salesmanship, just honest suggestions and help with accomplishing the mission. The deck installation went perfectly with the same quality of workmanship and materials, timeliness, and budget adherence I've come to know with UDA. It's obvious we are totally satisfied the UDA's quality, attention to detail, level of skill, prompt service, courtesy, there's just too much good to say to cover the experience adequately. If you need quality work done with professionalism, courtesy, and craftsmanship that surpasses other service providers, UDA is it, they get it done...
What Else Do Homeowners Ask About Garages?
Homeowners also ask about pole barn garages, permits, workshops and where to begin. A short answer to each follows.
Does UDA Services Build Pole Barn Garages?
Yes, we also build post-frame pole barns used as garages and workshops. A pole barn sets posts in the ground instead of walls on a slab foundation. Compare the two on our pole barn builder page.
Do You Need a Permit for a Detached Garage?
No, Pennsylvania's code exempts a detached garage under 1,000 square feet that serves a one-family home (34 Pa. Code 403.1). Whether a garage needs a building permit depends on its size, its use and your township. UDA Services applies for whichever permits the township requires.
Can a Detached Garage Double as a Workshop?
Yes, a detached garage can hold a workbench and tools as well as cars. A deeper or wider bay leaves room to work around a parked car.
How Do You Begin Planning a Garage With UDA Services?
Planning a garage begins with how many cars, what else it must hold and where it goes on the lot. Call (717) 497-9398 to book a free site visit, or use the quote form.
